The operating room in an accredited cosmetic surgeon facility

The Importance of an Accredited Surgical Facility

Choosing the right plastic surgeon is essential. In addition to considering the credentials of your surgeon, you should also know where they operate. An accredited surgical facility has to meet strict standards for safety and quality of care. As American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS) member surgeons, we only use accredited facilities for our procedures.

What is an Accredited Surgical Facility?

An accredited facility must meet criteria from one or more organizations. There are a variety of agencies that conduct these independent reviews. Although specific requirements differ, the general assessment will be fairly similar. All agencies will make sure the facility is prepared for emergencies, that procedures are performed by qualified surgeons and support staff, and that the operating area is clean.

Some common accrediting agencies include:

  • American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAASF)
  • Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC)
  • The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO)

Why Accreditation Matters

As a patient, you should verify that the facility where you are undergoing your procedure is accredited. The good news is ASPS member surgeons are required to use accredited facilities, so you will already have a good idea of whether the surgeon you are interested in operates in accredited surgical centers.

Here are some of the reasons why it’s important to choose an accredited facility:

Emergency Preparedness

Accredited surgical centers have plans in place for emergencies (power outages, fires, et cetera) and for complications that can occur during surgery. In addition to having a plan, they will need to have all the necessary equipment available. While these types of issues are exceedingly rare, patients can feel at ease knowing the facility is prepared for any potential situation.

Clean Facility

Cleanliness is essential for surgery. It’s important for your peace of mind as a patient to know that your surgical center will follow all necessary practices for cleaning and sanitization.

Qualified Staff

In addition to your surgeon, various other individuals will help with your procedure. Accredited facilities have requirements for all individuals who will be involved with surgeries.

Anesthesia Standards

For procedures that require intravenous (IV) sedation or general anesthesia, proper administration and monitoring are crucial. Accredited facilities have requirements in place for anesthesia. At Hess & Sandeen Plastic Surgery, we only work with board-certified anesthesiologists at the accredited surgical centers where we operate.

Privacy

Accredited surgical centers have to adhere to standards for protecting your privacy as a patient. This includes demonstrating compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
