Solutions for Saggy Skin

Aging can affect your skin in a variety of ways. Even if you carefully follow a good skin care routine and take preventive measures, your skin will lose elastin and collagen over the years. These proteins are responsible for keeping skin smooth and supple and when they are depleted, your skin will begin to show more wrinkles and may start to sag. Saggy skin is natural, but this doesn’t make it any easier to cope with the changes age can bring to the way you look. Luckily, there are a variety of solutions available to restore a more youthful appearance.

Non-Medical Options

There are many products on the market that claim to tighten skin or provide other anti-aging benefits. In general, it’s important to keep in mind that any results from these methods will be subtle. Skin care products can be a great preventive method, but they are not usually able to reverse significant age-related changes to your skin. However, as long as you maintain reasonable expectations, it’s okay to try a cream or over-the-counter solution first. Make sure to use one that contains retinoids and collagen and keep track of your results. If you aren’t noticing any change within a few months, or if you are seeking a more dramatic transformation, it may be time to consider other options.

Injectable Fillers

Injectable fillers are an excellent way to restore volume without undergoing surgery. This type of treatment works by replenishing your skin’s supply of hyaluronic acid (HA) or another plumping compound depending on the variety of filler you are getting. Injections can help fill out areas that have become more hollow due to aging. As a result, sagging may be less prominent. However, it’s important to keep in mind that a so-called “liquid facelift” is more suited to filling wrinkles and does not directly lift sagging skin. For more severe sagging, we will typically recommend a surgical solution.

Surgery to Correct Saggy Skin

A facelift removes excess skin and shifts the position of the remaining skin in order to restore a more youthful appearance. This is often the most effective option for treating saggy skin because it directly removes extra tissue. If you have skin around your neck as well, a neck lift can be added to correct this at the same time.

Sagging Body Skin

The above treatments are designed to address saggy facial skin. This is often the most prominent and most immediately noticeable change to your skin as you age, but aging can also lead to sagging of skin across your body. Loose skin may also occur after weight loss or pregnancy.  There are surgical treatments for any area that you are self-conscious about, ranging from thigh lifts to tummy tucks and more.
