How to Choose a Plastic Surgeon

The decision to undergo plastic surgery is not a simple one. Whether you are getting a body lift, breast augmentation, or a mommy makeover, deciding to permanently change your appearance can cause anxiety. Not every cosmetic surgeon is qualified or experienced with every procedure. Choosing the right plastic surgeon requires time, patience, and research. While the internet and referrals are a good place to start, you still should fully evaluate the surgeon before you make your decision.

Here are a few of the most important things to look for when picking your plastic surgeon:

Board-Certified

The most important term to look for to describe a plastic surgeon is “board-certified.” This certification should come from the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). This is the ONLY board that the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) recognizes for plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures. The ABMS is the gold standard for specialty boards.

To earn certification through ABPS, a doctor must complete at least six years of surgical training following medical school. A minimum of three years must be in plastic surgery residency. Once that extensive training is completed, a surgeon must then pass a comprehensive written and oral exam. Beyond training and testing, the surgeon must also provide the board with documented cases that have been completed since training ended. A surgeon who is board certified through the ABPS has the credentials, expertise, and knowledge to handle your case correctly from the moment you arrive in their practice. Dr. Hess and Dr. Sandeen are both board-certified plastic surgeons.

Surgeon’s Past Experience

It is important that the surgeon you choose specializes in and has successfully performed the cosmetic surgery procedure you are considering. The website of the surgeon you are researching should have before and after photos of past surgeries. The photos should be an accurate indication of the surgeon’s skill and performance and can give you a preview of what your results may look like.

Our website includes before and after photos of the plastic surgery procedures we have performed. We are also happy to discuss our experience with you in-person at your consultation.

How You Feel About the Plastic Surgeon and Nurses

In order to get the most out of your surgery, you want to make sure you feel comfortable with the individuals who will ultimately be in charge of your well-being. Your surgeon should make you and your decisions feel like their top priority. The office environment, as well as its employees, should also be professional and welcoming. Going into surgery can be intimidating and the people surrounding you should make you feel relaxed and well cared for. At Hess and Sandeen we recognize that every client is an individual and we are committed to providing each patient with the highest standard of care.
