Keloid Scar And
Other Scar Revision
Having a scar due to a healed wound or a birthmark can have a significant effect on your self-confidence. This is especially true if the scar is large or otherwise very prominent. Scar revision is a type of plastic surgery that can reduce the size of scars or otherwise alter their appearance to make them less noticeable. This can be performed on keloid scars, hypertrophic scars, contracture, and discoloration. We strive to deliver the best possible results for scar revision surgery.
Types Of Scars
There are many different types of scars. Each type will respond differently to surgery, so it’s important to set reasonable expectations based on the type of scar you have. We will discuss with you individually what you should expect from your plastic surgery. However, it can be helpful to know some general information before going into your consultation.
These are the types of scars that may be altered with cosmetic surgery:
Mild Scarring (Discoloration / Irregularities)
Some scars are more subtle than others. Certain scars present as discoloration or smaller irregularities in the surface of the skin. This is a broad category of scars that can be caused by acne, skin injuries, or surgical incisions. They do not cause physical pain or discomfort and are purely cosmetic.
Hypertrophic Scars
Hypertrophic scars develop directly on the site of the original wound. As the wound heals, tissues cluster, leading to a raised scar. The scar tissue is typically red in color and may be painful or uncomfortable. Over time, they may spread into the surrounding skin and become more noticeable.
Keloids
Keloids are smooth, hard growths that develop due to an overgrowth of scar tissue. These scars are often much larger than the original wound. They are more likely to form in areas that have fat or collagen deposits. The scar may be painful or itchy. Keloid formation is thought to be partially influenced by genetics.
Contractures
When tissues pull together as a wound heals, it can lead to a contracture. This type of scar restricts movement due to the tightness of muscles and skin. These are common when there is tissue loss, often due to a burn injury or when a wound crosses over a joint.
Recovery From Scar Revision
The most common side effect of keloid scar removal or other scar revision is localized swelling, redness, and discomfort. It is especially important that you follow all instructions for the healing process, as this will influence the final results. It can take up to several months for the incisions to fully heal. However, the results are long-lasting and you may have either a very small scar or one that blends in more naturally with your skin. Dr. Sandeen and Dr. Lee will go over specific recommendations for your recovery at your consultation.
