Everyone, regardless of their gender, deserves to love the way they look. For some individuals, plastic surgery can help achieve this goal. Although many people associate cosmetic surgery with women, men get plastic surgery, too. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), men underwent 1.1 million cosmetic procedures in the United States in 2020. 289,000 of these were surgeries.
The 2020 ASPS Plastic Surgery Statistics Report also includes a list of the most popular surgical procedures for men. Three of the procedures from the top 5 that we perform here at Hess & Sandeen Plastic Surgery were eyelid surgery, liposuction, and ear surgery. Eyelid surgery and liposuction also appeared in the top 5 for women.
The reasons men benefit from these surgeries are generally similar to why women choose to undergo plastic surgery. They can address areas that make men feel self-conscious and can improve your confidence in your appearance.
Eyelid Surgery/Blepharoplasty
Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, can lift drooping upper eyelids and/or remove bagginess from lower eyelids. This can rejuvenate your face and help you look younger and more alert. You may be surprised by just how much of a difference eyelid surgery can make!
In 2020, ASPS member surgeons performed 45,806 blepharoplasties on men.
You may benefit from this procedure if:
- The skin above your eyes sags.
- Your eyelids have a puffy appearance.
- There are bags under your eyes.
- Your eyelids look or feel heavy due to excess skin.
Liposuction
Liposuction removes excess fat using a cannula. Surgeons commonly perform this procedure on the abdomen, but it can help sculpt any area of your body where you have persistent fat deposits. It is important to keep in mind that liposuction addresses fat that remains even after diet and exercise. You should be at or very close to your ideal weight before undergoing the procedure.
In 2020, ASPS member surgeons performed 22,815 liposuctions on men.
You may benefit from this procedure if:
- You have stubborn fat deposits that do not respond to diet and exercise.
- You do not have excess skin in the area where you are considering liposuction. If the primary concern is sagging skin around your abdomen, a tummy tuck may be a better solution for you.
Ear Surgery/Otoplasty
Otoplasty, commonly known as ear surgery, can include procedures to address overly large ears (macrotia) or protruding ears. Ears that are too prominent can distract from your other facial features and make you feel self-conscious. Surgeons often perform otoplasty on children as this is when the issue first begins to appear. However, many adults who either did not have ear surgery as a child or who are unsatisfied with the results may choose to undergo the procedure later in life.
In 2020, ASPS member surgeons performed 22,464 otoplasties on men.
You may benefit from this procedure if:
- You feel your ears are too large for your face.
- Your ears protrude more than 2 cm, which is considered prominent.
- You had otoplasty as a child and are unhappy with the way your ears look as an adult.
Plastic Surgeries That are Specific to Men
We can perform any of the procedures above regardless of gender. However, one procedure at our clinic is specific to men: gynecomastia surgery. Gynecomastia is when a man has an enlarged chest due to a hormonal imbalance, resulting in the appearance of breasts. In some cases, the “breasts” are not a result of hormones but are instead fat deposits. This is known as pseudogynecomastia. We treat both true gynecomastia and pseudogynecomastia.
