What to Expect from a Facelift

Cosmetic surgery procedures can help you look younger and feel more confident in your appearance. For this reason, many men and women opt for a facial rejuvenation procedure such as a facelift. As with any type of surgical procedure, it’s important that you do your research and understand what plastic surgery involves and what sort of results you can expect. At Hess & Sandeen, we are here to help you every step of the way.

Here are some tips for what to expect when getting a facelift.

What is a Facelift?

Before you get any sort of cosmetic surgery, you should understand what the procedure does and how it works. A facelift, also known as a rhytidectomy, is a surgery that aims to remove or reduce visible signs of the aging process. This includes smoothing wrinkles and sun damage on the face and neck, a neck lift to reduce sagging skin, and uplifting the contours of your face.

For a traditional procedure, the plastic surgeon makes an incision from the front of the ears to your hairline. You will be under general anesthesia during this process so that you will not feel any pain. If you want less invasive surgery, you can also opt for a mini facelift. This type of facelift surgery involves a smaller incision and more subtle changes to the face.

Recovery from Facelift Surgery

One of your biggest concerns when considering plastic surgery is probably the recovery process. In the case of a facelift, you will be under general anesthesia for around 2 to 5 hours.  After the procedure, a majority of patients go home and begin recovery the same day. You may experience some discomfort, but medication can relieve tenderness. In addition, you may need a drain behind your ear to remove excess fluids. You will also need to keep the incisions covered with bandages to prevent infections. The day after surgery, you can expect to see some swelling and bruising. However, within the first few weeks, this should go down and you will be able to enjoy the results of your procedure.

Other Surgical Procedures

In some cases, a facelift may only produce some of the results you want from plastic surgery. While it will make you look younger and can improve the appearance of your skin, you may have other desired changes.

The most common surgeries people pair with a facelift procedure are eyelid surgery and brow lifts. These surgeries also help improve the overall appearance of your face. At Hess & Sandeen, we are always happy to consult with you to determine which procedures are best suited to your specific needs.
