Richard N. Hess, MD

Richard N. Hess, MD is a cosmetic, plastic, and reconstructive surgeon. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles with degrees in biology and chemistry. He then attended the University of Arizona Medical School and graduated in the top third of his class.

He performed his general surgical internship and residency at the Phoenix Integrated Surgical Residency program. He then completed his plastic surgery residency at the University of Rochester’s Strong Memorial Hospital in New York. Dr. Hess also spent six months to further study microsurgery and facial reconstruction at Roswell Park Memorial Institute in Buffalo, New York. His special interests throughout his training have been in cosmetic and hand surgery. He has also had special training in the use of lasers.

Dr. Hess is an active member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS). His tenure as the Section Chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Northwest Medical Center was from 1989 – 2000.

Dr. Hess performs many of his cosmetic procedures at Northwest Tucson Surgery Center located on the campus of Northwest Medical Center. For those patients requiring a hospital setting, Dr. Hess is an active staff member at Northwest Medical Center and Oro Valley Hospital. Dr. Hess performs his procedures (other than those under local anesthesia) only in accredited medical facilities and he utilizes only board-certified anesthesiologists. Dr. Hess and his staff strive to maintain the highest quality of care in a comfortable environment.

Sven N. Sandeen, MD

Sven N. Sandeen, MD is a cosmetic, plastic, and reconstructive surgeon. He attended the University of Arizona, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a degree in biology, a split minor in chemistry, physics, and math. He also obtained an additional minor in Spanish. Dr. Sandeen lived abroad in Spain during his senior year and was also accepted into Phi Beta Kappa. He then went on to attend the University of Arizona College of Medicine where he graduated in the top 5% of his class and was accepted into Alpha Omega Alpha medical honorary society.

Prior to graduating, he traveled to Ecuador. While there, he spent time with a local surgeon performing rural surgery near Cuenca. Dr. Sandeen performed his general surgical internship and residency at the University of Rochester in New York. He then completed his plastic surgery residency at the same institution. His special interests throughout his training have been in cosmetic, reconstructive, and hand surgery.

Surgical procedures, including both cosmetic and reconstructive, are performed by Dr. Sandeen at Northwest Tucson Surgery Center located on the campus of Northwest Medical Center. For those patients requiring or preferring a hospital setting, Dr. Sandeen is an active staff member at Northwest Medical Center, Oro Valley Hospital and Carondelet Foothills Surgery Center. These facilities are fully accredited and anesthesia is administered only by board-certified anesthesiologists.

Elizabeth S. Lee, MD

Elizabeth S. Lee, MD is the surgeon at our clinic and specializes in cosmetic, plastic, and reconstructive surgery. She graduated from the University of Arizona with a Bachelor of Science in Physiology and minors in Spanish and Chemistry. She then attended the University of Arizona College of Medicine, graduating in May of 2012.

Dr. Lee completed her general surgical internship and residency at the University of Arizona Department of Surgery and was Intern of the Year for 2012-2013. She then completed her plastic surgery residency at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, where she was the Administrative Chief Resident for 2019-2020. She was also an Assistant Clinic Professor for the Division of Plastic Surgery at Banner University Medical Center in Tucson prior to joining us at Hess & Sandeen Plastic Surgery.

Dr. Lee is board-certified with the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certified. She is a member of the Association of Women Surgeons, the Association of Academic Surgery, and the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Lee’s areas of interest include breast reconstruction, cosmetic, and transgender surgery. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her husband and three children, being outdoors, working out, and gardening.
